MIS to host bass fishing tournamentWritten by Betsy Woodruff | | firstname.lastname@example.org
The Michigan International Speedway (MIS) will host Fish Your Bass Off, a bass-fishing tournament to raise money for charity.
“It was just kind of a natural fit,” said Dennis Worden, manager of public relations at MIS.
Many NASCAR drivers, crew chiefs, team owners and fans are outdoorsmen, Worden said.
Many other NASCAR tracks raise money for charity as well, he said.
“Some have fancy dinners, and we have fishing tournaments,” Worden said.
This is the speedway’s second year of hosting a fishing tournament. This year’s tournament will be at Wampler’s Lake.
All the slots for competing in the tournament have been filled, but MIS is selling tickets for spectators. The tickets, which cost $35, include dinner at Jerry’s Pub & Restaurant.
The event will also have an auction, featuring a special edition die-cast car signed by Richard Petty, shirts worn by Ryan Newman’s Pit crew and sheet metal from Paul Menard.
The tournament starts at 5 p.m. on Aug. 12. Dinner and the auction begin at 6 p.m. There will be a cash bar, Worden said.
“It’s kind of like a party atmosphere,” he said.
Alisha Cottrell, MIS’s director of government and community affairs, said Elliott Sadler and Joey Logano will be present. Kevin VanDam, the world’s top bass angler and Mark Zona from ESPN will host the weigh-in, Cottrell said.
The money raised from Fissh Your Bass Off will support MIS Cares, a foundation the speedway created to help other charities.
“We wanted to be able to have our fans, the NASCAR Foundation, the drivers and the sponsors of our sport involved in our local area,” Cottrell said.
Local charities can apply for grants from MIS Cares in September. The grants are awarded in December.
MIS Cares has supported a variety of charities, including the American Red Cross, Hospice of Lenawee, Boys and Girls Club of Lenawee
