Red Cross, Columbia Gas promote safe winter heatingWritten by Kristen Criswell | | firstname.lastname@example.org
The Greater Toledo Area Chapter of the American Red Cross teamed with Columbia Gas of Ohio to urge families to be safe this winter when heating their homes.
“Home fires are the leading cause of disaster in out area. We respond to an average of four fires per week and that becomes more frequent in the winter months,” said Jodie Tienvieri, communications manager at the Red Cross. “We know as it gets colder people are going to turn to alternate heating sources, which we don’t recommend.”
The Red Cross urges individuals to be cautious when using space heaters, fires and other heating sources this winter. The Red Cross recommends keeping flammable material such as paper, furniture and bedding at least three feet away from heating equipment.
Columbia Gas of Ohio wants anyone who thinks they may struggle with paying their bill this winter to contact them at 1-800-344-4077 to avoid any interruption of their service.
The Greater Toledo Area Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to more than 200 home fires last year.
