OSU-Michigan a noon start, as it should be

BUCKEYES BUZZ: Michigan coach Bo Schembechler once said that college football games are meant to be played at noon or 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoons – no exceptions.

Somewhere, Bo is happy about the Ohio State-Michigan game.

The Big Ten announced Monday that The Game will kick off at noon on Nov. 21 from the Big House. The game will be nationally televised by ABC.

STAFF PICKS: Like the local librarians who list their favorite reading material, the Ohio State coaches each week select who they thought were the best and brightest in the previous week’s game.

From Saturday’s 24-7 victory at Penn State, they chose DE Cameron Heyward as the defensive player of the week after he had 11 tackles, two sacks and three tackles for minus yardage. QB Terrelle Pryor, with a TD rushing and two passing, was the offensive honoree. And frequent Jim Tressel-doghouse-inhabitant Ray Small was the pick on special teams after seven punt returns for 130 yards.

The OL of the week was TE Jake Ballard. DE Thaddeus Gibson was singled out as the best on the front seven on defense.

On special teams, pats on the back went to OL Jack Mewhort, DL Dalton Britt and RB James Georgiades.

TWO OUT OF THREE AIN’T BAD: The Meat Loaf song also describes Ohio State’s role in the Big Ten awards.

Cameron Heyward, the junior DE out of Suwanee, Ga., was the conference’s defensive player of the week. Small, a senior from Cleveland Glenville HS, took the award on special teams.

The offensive honoree was Purdue QB Joey Elliott, who completed 72 percent of his passes for a career-high 367 yards and two TDs in a victory at Michigan.

DOESN’T TASTE LIKE CONCRETE: The 19th annual Ohio Stadium cake will be on display starting at 8 a.m. on the south lawn of St. John Arena and will be cut up and served immediately after the game, with donations going to the Stadium Cake Scholarship Fund. For more info, visit www.OhioStadiumCake.com

BIG TEN NOTEBOOK: The four teams (Ohio State, Iowa, Penn State, Wisconsin) atop the Big Ten standings have combined for 12 conference titles over the past 11 years, with each team winning at least two championships in that span. … After improving to 6-4 last weekend, Northwestern joined Iowa (9-1), Ohio State (8-2), Penn State (8-2) and Wisconsin (7-2) as the fifth Big Ten team to become bowl eligible. … With just two weekends of Big Ten play remaining, every conference team still has a chance to take part in a bowl game. … Weird stat of the week: All five Big Ten games were won by the visiting team on Saturday for the first time since 2006. … For those looking ahead, here are the matchups and ET game times for Nov. 21: Minnesota at Iowa, noon; Wisconsin at Northwestern, 3:30 p.m.; Purdue at Indiana, 3:30 p.m.; Penn State at Michigan State, 3:30 p.m.
