New Disney home video reviews
Written by Michael Siebenaler | | news@toledofreepress.comAs always, Disney has new home video releases that entertain and educate children for the holiday season.
Tinkerbell and the Lost Treasure
This two disc Blu-ray version (in 1080p High Def (1.78:1)) really showcases the strong animation and includes the BD Live feature, a “Magical Guide through Pixie Hollow” and a Tinker Bell Comes to Disney World featurette along with French and Spanish language options. This new Tinkerbell origin series continues with this favorite fairy’s search for a special mirror after her special tinkering assignment goes awry.
Filmmakers expand the role of Tinkerbell’s friend Terrence, voice by Jeese McCartney, as he helps her on this special “moonstone” project. New characters include Blaze the Firefly and a quick cameo from two trolls who enhance the story themes on friendship. The Fairy Tale Theater sequence initiates Tink’s adventurous trip while introduces a group which Tinkerbell encounters a lot in the future – pirates. The Celtic-style music soundtrack continues while special features include a video of the new “The Gift of a Friend” song by Disney Channel’s Demi Lovato. Young ones can also continue the experience in Disney Fairies Pixie Hollow online virtual world. Little Einsteins – Fire Truck Rocket’s Blastoff
This 95 minute Disney Playhouse television series DVD features three episodes from the popular Baby Einstein video series plus one new episode called “Fire Truck Rocket” which features rescue action accompanied by the music of Tchaikovsky. “Melody the Music Pet” and “Carmine’s Big Race” continue the strong music themes while “Mr. Penguin’s Ice-Cream Adventure” adds the perfect winter animal to the collection. These four resourceful little tykes and their red rocket ship, aptly named Rocket, maneuver through some amazing graphics and memorable exercises for young ones as they learn about the fine arts through adventure.
The dancer June, red-haired leader Leo, singer Annie, and musical star Quincy echo famous figures June Taylor, Leopold Stokowski, Annie Ross, and Quincy Jones. This DVD also features a special interactive mode where wee ones answer trivia from two difficulty levels (one ages 2 to 3 and the other 4 to 6). Disney Little Einsteins: The Christmas Wish DVD also available (***).
Baby Einstein World Animal Adventure
The latest 35 minute learning set in the Baby Einstein DVD series expands with pandas, kangaroos, snow monkeys and other worldly creatures with music and learning concepts.
Creators add a special “Grow with Me” mode with added words for parents to use with baby as they advance through their vocabulary. The select-a-segment lets viewers watch 5 or 10 minute segments or puppet shows. The puppet show characters and ending World Animal song, filled with steel drum rhythms and lyrics, can get any young one interacting with the video. Spanish and French language options available. A great, recommended title for 12 months and over, but enjoyable for any age (**1/2).
