Written by Associated Press | | news@toledofreepress.com

The Highway Patrol says five motorists died in Fourth of July weekend crashes in Ohio, the fewest since 1998, when four motorists died.

Fifteen died in Ohio crashes during last year’s Fourth of July weekend.

Of this year’s deaths, two were killed in ATV crashes and one in a motorcycle crash. None were wearing helmets.

Two others died in vehicle crashes and were not wearing seat belts.

At least three of the crashes did not involve alcohol; toxicology results are pending on the other two deaths.

The patrol also says 556 drivers were arrested on charges of driving while impaired from 6 p.m. through Sunday, compared with 693 a year ago.
