Empire Drift was presented with a proclamation from the Lucas County commissioners on June 2, declaring “A Good Place to Call Home” the official song of Toledo for one year. Commissioners Tina Skeldon Wozniak, Pete Gerken and Ben Konop, a judge for the Toledo Free Press/FOX Toledo contest, approved the resolution.
The band performed the song for the commissioners upon receiving the honor.
“It’s such a great song and it made me feel like dancing,” Skeldon Wozniak said. “It was great and everyone loved it.”
Guitarist Rick Shugarman said the band felt honored.
“It was very rewarding to get recognized by our government officials for our song-writing abilities and our pride of our great city of Toledo,” he said.
The proclamation has been one of many honors Empire Drift has received since winning the contest.
On May 21, Empire Drift played its winning song for Rep. Marcy Kaptur and Barack Obama’s “Auto Czar,” Ed Montgomery.
Empire Drift received recognition from the Toledo City Council in the form of a resolution on May 26, which also declared “A Good Place to Call Home” the official song of Toledo for one year.
“These are such personable guys,” Skeldon Wozniak said, “I think they’re going to do great things and go far.”
The band will celebrate its win with a June 5 concert at the Blarney Irish Pub and Grill in Downtown Toledo, and will open for national acts at Smoke on the Water — Ribs for the Red Cross and at the August NASCAR races at Michigan International Speedway.
