The Ohio Senate Finance Committee has begun hearings on its pared down version of the state’s proposed two-year budget.

The Senate’s rewrite of the budget guts Gov. Ted Strickland’s school-funding plan and cuts $650 million to meet new, lower revenue projections.

Some social service advocates on Saturday thanked the Republican-led body for preserving programs for poor Ohioans and their children.

Ohio State University President Gordon Gee also thanked the Senate, which is maintaining a proposed tuition freeze next year, for supporting higher education.

Ann Sheldon, who lobbies for gifted children, expressed her concern with a 12 percent cut in dollars that support gifted programs.
