Stephen Ward to declare council candidacyWritten by Toledo Free Press Staff Writers | | firstname.lastname@example.org
Local minister, community activist and former Toledo Free Press guest columnist Stephen Ward will announce his candidacy for Toledo City Council At-Large at 10 a.m. April 30 in front of the Salem Lutheran Church located at 1125 N. Huron St.
“It’s time for the citizens of Toledo to be heard,” Ward said in a news release. “We must create a community for all people, and this requires a Servant Leadership approach to government.”
While Ward is a lifelong Democrat, he will run as an Independent, he stated in the release.
“The challenges facing Toledo effects everyone regardless of race, gender, social status, or political affiliation,” Ward said. “At the end of the day what matters most, is working and making decisions…decisions not of my own or a political party, but that of the citizens of Toledo. No longer can important decisions be made with too little input from the citizens who will be affected by those decisions. The greatest leader forgets himself, and attends to the development of others.
“I am sensitive to the fact that we are living in a time of famine. A time of sacrifice. A time when residents are being laid off, and some people are only a paycheck away from being homeless. Therefore, I promise you that I will run a ‘no monetary donation’ campaign. I pledge to you that I will not take money from special interest groups or the citizens of Toledo. Furthermore, I promise you that when you elect me to City Council, I will willingly take a 20% pay cut by donating that portion of the salary back to the city to help with the financial crisis that Toledo is in. I believe that city leaders should lead. It is not fair to lay off city employees and cut salaries, if the city leaders won’t first take the pay cuts. Therefore, I challenge my fellow council candidates to also lead by example, by joining myself in donating 20% of their council salary back to the City of Toledo if elected.”
