ir efforts to provide a season full of special appearances, events and other game-day promotions.
“We look at what’s popular, what’s big in pop culture and what the fans might be into,” said JaMay Edwards, manager of promotions.
The Mud Hens’ season is filled with a number of regular events, including Autograph Sundays, when two Mud Hens player sign autographs for 30 minutes up to 15 minutes before game time every Sunday home game.
Another popular and regular event at Sunday home games allows kids age 12 and under to run the bases when the game’s last out is called.
This summer’s top acts include Rockin’ Ray & the Amazing Skyy Dogs on July 8 and 10; Reggy the Purple Party Dude on May 14 and 15; and the ZOOperstars! on Aug. 27.
While Edwards said the Mud Hens repeat popular promotions from year to year — like they did with Hilarious Hat Day for the 2004, 2005 and 2006 seasons — they try to keep promotions fresh.
One significant promotion this year will be on May 14 with Legacy of Diversity Day. The team will pay tribute to Moses Fleetwood Walker, who was the first black to play for a major league baseball team. In 1844 Walker, and his brother Welday, played for the Toledo Blue Stockings when the team joined the American Association, then considered a major baseball league. Edwards said she is working to get a descendant of Walker’s to be part of the pregame ceremony.
Celebrity sightings scheduled at Fifth Third Field include a Mother’s Day appearance by Daniel Goddard, who plays Ethan Cane Ashby on “The Young and the Restless” soap opera; Dora the Explorer (June 11), Dora’s cousin Diego (April 17), SpongeBob SquarePants (July 9), Batman (May 28), The Incredible Hulk (June 25), Captain America (July 23), Spider-Man (Aug. 6) and Ronald McDonald (June 23, July 20, Aug. 25). The Mud Hens will have Walleye Night on Sept. 4.
Though details are not finalized, Edwards said she is working to include a U.S. citizen naturalization ceremony as part of the Flag Day celebration on June 14.
