Glacity Theatre Collective offering comedy in a new locationWritten by John Dorsey | | firstname.lastname@example.org
The Glacity Theatre Collective’s latest production is definitely a laughing matter. The company is offering patrons twice the funny business with a pair of rotating comedies by noted Canadian playwright George F. Walker.
The plays, “Problem Child” and “Criminal Genius,” come from Walker’s famed collection “Suburban Motel.”
The cast for both shows includes Kate Abu-Absi, Irene Alby, Deborah Coulter-Harris, Dave DeChristopher, Matt Gretzinger, and Ben Pryor. Cornel Gabara is directing both pieces. The set designer was James S. Hill. Holly Monsos designed the costumes. Both plays are being stage managed by Halina LaRiccia.
“Being from Canada originally, I’ve known about Walker’s work for a long time, and have always found it to be very funny,” said Collective ‘s managing director Irene Alby. “We were originally planning to put on another production, which we tried out at the arts commission’s Meet and Greet. We didn’t really feel like the piece connected with our audience, so I suggested these plays, which I had originally seen in French in Montreal and they ended up being a perfect fit for us, not only in terms their comedic timing, but also because of their ability to be put on in a more intimate setting.”
Glacity recently moved to the second floor of the Davis Building.
“Because of the move, we had to put these plays together very quickly, which wouldn’t have come together at all without the ability and guidance of our set designer Jim Hill. It was really neat to watch the conversion of such a previously raw space, into a beautiful working theater,” Alby said.
Glacity’s past productions include “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” “Breathing Corpses” and Eurydice. “
“Problem Child” will run Jan. 31 and Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. “Criminal Genius” will run on Jan. 30, Feb. 5 and 7 at 8 p.m. On Feb. 1, there will be a special 2 p.m. “pay what you can” Sunday matinee for “Criminal Genius”.
