KeyBank forms new district

Written by Toledo Free Press Staff Writers | | news@toledofreepress.com

KeyBank has named James A. Hoffman president of a newly created Michigan/Northwest Ohio District. The new district combines Key’s former Northwest Ohio and Michigan districts and will serve clients in the greater Toledo and Southeastern Michigan area, stretching from Findlay and Sandusky, to Ann Arbor and Detroit. According to a news release, Hoffman has served as Key’s Northwest Ohio District president since 1993, leading the district to Key’s “District of the Year” award in 2007.

As previously announced in late November, former Michigan District President Bill Koehler will move to Cleveland to lead a new corporate initiative.

Combining Key’s Northwest Ohio and Michigan districts will enable the company to realign its resources to provide better marketplace coverage and grow marketshare. The new district will have nearly 500 employees, 71 branches and 97 ATMs. In addition, Key expects to realize some economies of scale and cost savings.

“Jim has demonstrated the ability to develop and lead successful, client-focused teams,” said Chuck Sulerzyski, president of KeyBank’s Great Lakes Region. “Our clients in Michigan and Northwest Ohio will benefit from his financial knowledge, experience and leadership. We expect this transition to be transparent for our clients in Michigan and Northwest Ohio.”

Hoffman will be responsible for growing the client base in Key’s Retail Banking, Business Banking, Private Banking & Investment Management and Commercial Banking in Northwest Ohio and Michigan. In addition to increasing profitability in all franchise lines of business, Hoffman will be accountable for the new district’s revenue, expense management, profitability and credit quality.

Tim Gretkierewicz, who leads Key’s business banking team in Ann Arbor, will continue in that role and will assume the additional role of market president. As market president, Gretkierewicz will be “the face of Key” in the Michigan market, serving on civic boards and acting as Key’s local spokesperson. Gretkierewicz will be located in Ann Arbor and will report to Hoffman, who is located in Toledo.

Gretkierewicz will continue his involvement in the community. He serves on the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce and the Finance Committee of the local United Way.
