Fundraiser aids Save-A-Pet

Santa Claus will help a local volunteer pet rescue organization to fundraise.

Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet will host its annual “Santa Paws” fundraiser, where people are invited to bring their pets to get a photograph with Santa.

Although the 20-year-old event, brings in mostly dogs and cats, all pets are welcome, said June Remley, the organization’s president. Rabbits, snakes, birds and even a horse have gotten their pictures taken with Santa.

Santa will be at Pet Supplies “Plus” on the corner of Airport and Reynolds and PETCO on Monroe and Talmadge on Saturday Dec. 6. On Saturday Dec. 13 he’ll be at PETCO again and on Dec. 14 he’ll move to Pet Supplies “Plus” on Talmadge by Franklin Park Mall.

Save-A-Pet members will take and print photos at PETCO on the spot, Remley said.

The photos will cost $8.95 and Save-A-Pet will receive $5 for each photo, said Lenora Altmeir, the store’s manager.

Pet Supplies “Plus” is supplying the photographer and will have photo packages available ranging in price from $10 to $25, Remley said. All of the proceeds will go to Save-A-Pet.

Maumee Valley Save-A-Pet was founded in 1977 to provide adoption services for stray and abandoned animals. The organization provides for the animals including veterinary care and foster care. They do not use euthanasia on the animals unless a veterinarian advises them to do so, Remley said.

Save-A-Pet does not have its own operating location so pets live with members until they find a home through the adoption showings they hold every Saturday. Along with the use of their homes, the organization relies on donations from its members and fundraising events to cover costs.

They have auctions, dinner events, book fairs, rummage sales and solicitation letters to raise money throughout the year. The goal is to have one fundraising event a month, Remley said.

“We are always in need of more funding to care for these animals. We care for a lot of sick and injured animals in this area,” she said.

“We can earn up to several thousand dollars when you combine the funds (from the different locations during the “Santa Paws” fundraiser),” she said. However, the funds vary and with the economy she is not sure how the fundraiser will go this year, she said.
