Husband wins care rights for stricken wife
Written by Associated Press | | news@toledofreepress.comThe husband of a woman in Ohio who has been in a persistent vegetative state since early September has won a battle with his wife’s family over guardianship.
Both sides reached an agreement Nov. 25 in a Toledo court that will allow Robert Lavers to have control over his 38-year-old wife’s medical care.
Lavers applied for guardianship after his wife’s sister made the same request. Lavers said he feared that his sister-in-law would discontinue life support if she was given guardianship.
Heather Lavers has been in a persistent vegetative state since having a heart attack while sleeping at her home in Gibsonton, Fla.
She has since been moved into a nursing home near Toledo.
Doctors have said it’s unlikely that she will awaken.
