Game inspires parties, philanthropic events
Written by Duane Ramsey | | news@toledofreepress.comThousands of Ohio State and Michigan football fans will gather to watch the game on Nov. 22. About 200 chapters of the Ohio State Alumni Association host football parties in almost every state from Anchorage, Alaska, to Honolulu to as far south as Key West, Fla. Parties are planned for chapters in Toronto, Hong Kong and Shanghai, China.
UM Alumni Association chapters also hold parties across the country, including one on the home turf of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
The UM Club of Toledo is hosting an OSU versus UM Party at the Belmont Country Club in Perrysburg on Nov. 22. The $18 cost includes watching the game on a big-screen TV, stadium-type foods, lots of refreshments and a chance to participate in a tailgating raffle.
Most of the parties are hosted for fans of either the OSU or UM persuasion, but there is at least one local celebration for Buckeye and Wolverine fans.
The Toledo Day Nursery is hosting the annual “Battle of the Fans” with celebrity wait staff on Nov. 16 beginning at 5 p.m. at Parkway Plaza. Tickets are $40 and include burgers, chili and a “scarlet-tini” cash bar with live and silent auctions.
A pair of tickets to the game will be awarded to the highest bidder. Proceeds from the Battle of the Fans will benefit at-risk children from the central city by raising funds for early childhood education programs at the Toledo Day Nursery.
“We don’t have anything official planned because most of our board members are going to the game,” said Roger Moser, president of the OSU Alumni Club of Lucas County.
The local alumni club held its board meeting Nov. 11 and gave away two tickets to the Michigan game in Columbus. Nathan Heid of Lambertville, Mich, won the tickets. The club’s favorite watering hole is Dale’s Bar and Grill on Conant Street in Maumee. The establishment will hold its annual celebration beginning with breakfast brunch at 10 a.m. Nov. 22 followed by lunch from noon to 11 p.m. with drawings for Buckeye apparel and items.
“We expect the usual packed house we have every year. It’s always a lot of fun.” said Bill Anderson, owner of Dale’s Bar and Grill.
The UM Club of Toledo is sponsoring a book reading at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Jewish Community Center. Detroit Free Press sportswriter Michael Rosenberg will read from “War As They Knew It: Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, and America in a Time of Unrest”, a story about the two great coaches and their 10-year war on the gridiron.
On Nov. 21, the Border Battle Bash benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of Toledo. Enjoy live music, football-themed silent auction items, freshly grilled hamburgers, beer and liquor. Tickets are $35.
