Claassen’s debut novel, “Kathryn’s Fountain,” is being published this month by Cladach Publishing, which specializes in Christian paperbacks.

He will make a number of appearances to promote the book, including a signing at Monroe, Mich.’s 10th Annual Writers on the River Author and Book Fair at the Ellis Reference and Information Center on Nov. 9.

“I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I started out on an old Underwood manual typewriter,” Claassen said. “Over the years I had made several attempts at completing a novel; the difference this time was that I literally woke up with the idea and knew that I wouldn’t be at peace until I put it down on paper.”

Claassen worked on the book for six months before he began submitting it to prospective publishers, but as pleased as he is with its publication, he isn’t about to quit his day job.

Claassen has served as the pastor of Mayfair-Plymouth Congregational Church of Toledo since 1975.

He is also the author of several works of nonfiction, including “The Comparison Game,” “Exploring the Christian Faith,” “Silent Words Loudly Spoken: Church Sign Sayings,” “Object Lessons For A Year” and the children’s book “Journey to the Emperor’s Throne.”

He has also worked for several years as a photographer.

“This book is about people who feel marginalized in our society, those that feel like they have nothing to offer,” he said. “I think it tells a story that will connect with readers from all walks of life, including those who have a spiritual side, but it is not at all preachy, though I do feel it is important for fiction to have a message.”

Claassen’s Monroe signing will run from 12 to 3 p.m. Other upcoming promotional appearances include radio interviews on WPOS-FM 102.3 on Nov. 14, and on YES-FM 89.3 on Nov. 19. He will also appear for in-store signings at the Franklin Park area Barnes & Noble located at 4940 Monroe St. on Nov. 29 and at the Family Christian Bookstore at 4015 Secor Road on Dec. 6. Appearance information can be found on the “Kathryn’s Fountain” page at www.daveclaassen.com.
