Findlay welcomes Palin; Palin meets corn maze family
Written by Brandi Barhite | Special Sections Editor | bbarhite@toledofreepress.comRepublican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin didn’t let a protester ruin her message Oct. 22 at The University of Findlay.
“They escorted him out too early, that person could have learned a lot,” Palin told a packed field house that was treated to a surprise musical performance by Lee Greenwood.
The Alaskan governor poked fun at Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden for guaranteeing an international crisis if the Obama-Biden ticket was elected.
“Thanks for the warning, Joe,” Palin said of Biden’s Oct. 19 speech.
Obama wants to sit down with the world’s worst leaders with no conditions, Palin said. He also opposed the surge strategy that has finally brought victory in Iraq. After the Russian Army invaded the Democratic nation of Georgia, the senator’s reaction was one of indecision, she said.
Palin reminded the crowd of Biden’s early assessment of Obama that he wasn’t up to the job and that “the presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training.”
“This is the same Joe Biden who said he would be honored to run on a ticket with John McCain.” He said, “The country would be better off.”
Palin said she wants a president who spent 22 years in uniform; she wants a president who isn’t afraid to use the word ‘victory’ when talking about wars; and she wants a president who is ready on day one.
“This is about the future of our country. I look at these young kids especially and say this is about their future. This is about the future of America.”
Palin paid homage to Toledo’s “Joe the Plumber,” made famous by his questioning of Obama’s tax plan. When McCain spoke in Toledo on Oct. 19 he also thanked the plumber from Springfield Township.
“Our opponent is not being candid with you about his tax cut agenda,” Palin said. “It is not mean-spirited; it is not negative campaigning to call someone out on their record and their plans and their associations.”
“It doesn’t sound like you support ‘Barack the Wealth Spreader,’” Palin said, as the crowd booed for Obama.
Bigger government is the problem, not the solution, according to Palin. Biden called paying higher taxes “patriotic.”
“You don’t want your dreams dashed by an Obama tax plan,” she said. “And if you don’t like the way opponents have treated a guy who asked a simple question, then we are all ‘Joe the Plumber,’ too.”
As governor, Palin said she put a veto to wasteful spending, and the state’s surplus is being returned to the residents of Alaska.
Palin said she and McCain will work to achieve energy independence, as well as tap into the resources the country already has. The crowd responded by chanting, “Drill baby, drill.”
“It is going to be such a close race,” Palin said. “It is going to come down to what we believe in. What John McCain and I believe in, is what Ronald Reagan believed in. We believe in freedom and not the constant expansion of government. And we believe the best of America is not all gathered in Washington, D.C. It is here, it is in the kindness and the goodness and the courage of everyday, hardest-working American people. Those of you, who run our factories, grow our food, teach our children and fight our wars.”
Palin meets family that has Palin maze
Duke Wheeler and his family met Sarah Palin when she arrived at the Toledo Airport on Tuesday night.
Although the vice presidential candidate wasn’t able to visit the cornfield maze that donned her face, Wheeler said her plane flew over it. Palin spoke at a rally in Findlay on Wednesday morning.
Wheeler said the Sarah Palin corn maze at The Butterfly House in Whitehouse, which he owns, opened Sept. 23. The words “Sarah America” are carved above her head.
The maze is open Fridays from 6 p.m. to midnight; Saturdays noon to midnight; Sundays noon to 8 p.m. and Wednesdays by appointment.

Obama claims he dances better the John McCain. Palin should point out that,it is not surprising that John McCain does not dance as well as Oboma. Let Oboma try the injuries sustained by John McCain and just try to walk. Obama should applad John McCain’s service and not ridicule him with outragous comments and challenges in the media.
