“Congrats to Joe, that is an incredibly impressive achievement,” McCain said during a rally at the SeaGate Convention Centre in Downtown Toledo that attracted a few thousand people.
“Joe didn’t ask for Sen. Obama to come to his house; Joe certainly didn’t ask to be famous; he certainly didn’t ask for political attacks on him from the Obama campaign,” the Republican presidential hopeful said. “Joe, if you are watching, I am sorry you are being put through this. No American should be attacked for asking questions of a presidential candidate.”
Joe Wurzelbacher of Springfield Township talked with Obama on Oct. 12 when the presidential hopeful was canvassing the Toledo area neighborhood. Wurzelbacher said he objects to the Democratic presidential hopeful’s plans to raise income taxes on incomes above $250,000 because it would hurt him if he bought a business. Since then he has become a media sensation.
He said, “Is it right to take someone’s money because they work a little harder? It’s taking away from someone’s hard work.”
McCain told the crowd that Obama is “more interested in controlling who gets your piece of the pie than he is in growing the pie.”
“Friends, America has an alternative to the phony tax cut that my opponent starting talking about only months ago, the McCain/Palin tax cut is the real thing.”
McCain said he will double the child deduction for every family; cut capital gains taxes; and cut business taxes to help create jobs and to keep American jobs in America.
“Joe has now reminded us all,” McCain said. “America didn’t become the greatest nation on Earth by giving its money to the government to spread the wealth around. In this country, we believe in spreading opportunity.”
McCain said America faces many enemies in this dangerous world, as well as challenges at home.
“The next president won’t have the time to get used to the office; he will have to act immediately,”
McCain said he will take care of people devastated by the excess of Wall Street and Washington, D.C. He has a plan to protect the value of people’s homes.
He wants to up bad mortgages and refinance them so if your neighbor defaults it doesn’t’ bring down the value of your home.
McCain also has a plan to hold the line on taxes and to allow people about to retire to keep their money in the accounts longer so they can rebuild them.
“Raising taxes makes a bad economy worse,” he said.
McCain will keep small business taxes where they are at and let them spend their earnings to create more jobs. If he is elected, McCain said “I won’t make it harder to sell our goods overseas and kill more jobs as Sen. Obama proposes.”
The national media has "written us off," McCain told the crowd. Sen. Obama is measuring the drapes and preparing to raise taxes, increase spending and concede defeat in Iraq. But they forgot to let you decide, McCain said. We have them just where we want them,” he said.
“I have fought for you for most of my life. There are other ways to love this country, but I have never been the kind to do it from the sidelines, McCain said.
“My friends, I know what fear is like. It is a thief of the night that robs your strength.
I know what hopelessness feels like. It is the enemy that defeats your will. I have felt those things once before, I will never let them in again. I am an American and I choose to fight.”
