Thurber named Blogger of the Year
Written by Aya Khalil | | news@toledofreepress.comToledo Free Press writer and host of WSPD’s “Eye on Toledo” Maggie Thurber was named Blogger of the Year by Americans for Prosperity (AFP) for her blog, http://thurbersthoughts.blogspot.com. Thurber accepted the award on Oct. 11 at Washington D.C. during AFP’s second American Dream Summit. Thurber said one of the reasons she won the award was because she merged old media with new media.
“[I showed] citizen activism through my work in association with the American for Prosperity Ohio Chapter,” she said. “It was a combination of how I worked all through those things together through the blog and through my other activities that caused them to give me Blogger of the Year award.”
The AFP, a nonprofit think tank, educates citizens about economic policies and encourages them to let their voices be heard.
Thurber began blogging in 2006, but started “actively promoting and posting” in 2007. Her blog, which talks about local issues, has more than 100,700 views. Thurber, former Lucas County Commissioner, started with few readers. She said she appreciates the encouragement and help from Lisa Renee Ward of glasscityjungle.com and Michael Brooks of historymike.blogspot.com.
“[I’m] humbled. I look at what other bloggers are doing and realized that not all are bridging the old media and new media activism connection,” she said. “I think I have a long way to go but I am certainly highly honored that they picked me.”
