Credit unions offer free document shredding

Written by Scott McKimmy | | news@toledofreepress.com

The Northwest Ohio Chapter of Credit Unions (NOCCU) will hold its second annual “Shred for Safety,” offering to dispose of sensitive documents from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 18 at three OfficeMax locations. OfficeMax and Allshred Services are partnering with the credit unions for the free, public events.

“Shred for Safety” celebrates International Credit Union week, Oct. 12 to 18, and International Credit Union Day on Oct.16. Shredding services will take place at 5331 Monroe St., 2802 Curtice Road in Northwood, 10025 Freemont Pike in Perrysburg.

Brenda Covrett, NOCCU marketing chair, said the event is intended for both credit union members and nonmembers, raising awareness of a growing problem that can be avoided. While the public is welcome to destroy private documents, she said, the free service is limited to four boxes or bags of “shredables.”

“It’s a way for us to promote the credit unions while encouraging the safe document shredding, which is so important today with all of the identity theft and other fraud issues,” Covrett said. “It’s so important that people correctly dispose of their financial documents.”

Allshred Services in Maumee provides a list of documents considered too sensitive to dispose of without shredding. Tom Huth, vice president of operations, explained the extensive security efforts his company takes to ensure customers’ safety. GPS and cameras systems enable tracking from “cradle to grave,” he explained, which can be viewed on the Internet.

“We’re the Fort Knox of the shredding industry,” he said.

Allshred recommends safe destruction of the following personal documents:

  • Canceled and blank checks
  • Credit card and account numbers
  • Credit information
  • Legal contracts
  • Tax records
  • Medical records
  • Applications for employment and credit applications
  • Social Security Numbers
  • Signatures
  • Correspondence
  • Patient or Medical Information
