The Area Office on Aging of Northwest Ohio (AOoA) will present Senior Safari 2008 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 23 at The Toledo Zoo.

Senior Safari is one of the many events included in the zoo’s Senior Discovery Days hosted Tuesdays during September and October.

On Senior Discovery Days, seniors receive free admission, free parking, a fresh-brewed cup of coffee and a mini-muffin at the Timberline Bakery, in addition to a 10 percent discount on zoo memberships and a seniors-only discount at the North Star Trading Post.

“September and October are ideal months for Senior Discovery Days because the kids are back in school and it’s not as warm,” said Jennifer Brassil, events coordinator at the zoo.

Brassil said the seniors events offered during September and October have topped 1,000 in attendance.

The main feature of the Senior Safari is to invite exhibitors to help screen seniors for health. The free services available include blood pressure screening, hearing tests, bone density testing, cholesterol testing and blood sugar testing.

“Seniors love the event and it gives them the opportunity to see the zoo” said Sherry Secoy, communications coordinator for the AOoA.

This year a special attraction will be “Dancing With the Stars.” Staff from Alfredo’s Studio of Dance will encourage seniors to participate in the dancing and will teach a few dance steps.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to attend a luncheon prepared by the Lucas County Senior Nutrition. Lunch tickets may be purchased in advance by calling (419) 382-0624. The cost is $2.50 for seniors 60 and older and $5.50 for everyone else.

The menu consists of hot barbecue chicken, green  beans, potatoes, roll, dessert and a beverage. Lunch will be at 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m.

Secoy said AOA is expecting attendees from senior centers, retirement homes, nursing homes and assisted-living facilities, with many of the senior centers providing transportation. Secoy said seniors who need transportation should call the Area Office of Aging at (800) 472-7277.

Free parking will be available in the Anthony Wayne lot and transportation, via golf carts, will be available to transport people from the zoo entrance to the Nairobi Pavilion.

Secoy said this year’s Senior Safari will present Mrs. Ohio International, Gerri Walczak and Mrs. Ohio-America 2008, Tonya Stump.
