50+ Sports Classic increases participants, sponsorshipsWritten by Toledo Free Press Staff Writers | | firstname.lastname@example.org
Organizers for the 2008 50+ Sports Classic reported a 20 percent increase in the number of competitors from 2007.
Approximately 170 individuals participated in the Classic, which took place June 14, said Justin Moor, Aging Resource Center director for the Area Office on Aging of Northwestern Ohio Inc., the event’s primary sponsor.
“Word of mouth certainly helps,” Moor said of the event’s growth. “The 140 participants that were involved with the 2007 games enjoyed the competition and enjoyed having fun at the event. They talked about it to their friends and recruited them to participate in 2008.”
Moor said several local churches that planned to organize their own Senior Olympics event expressed interest in pairing with the 50+ Sports Classic for next year’s event. He said officials from the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library system said they would help next year by making entry forms available at local branches.
“We’re well-positioned to have a large increase in participation in 2009,” Moor said.
The event also saw a 20 percent increase in sponsorships this year, Moor said.
