Green Energy Ohio has named U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur as its Public Official of the Year. The award will be presented to Congresswoman Kaptur on July 12 at the Solar 2007 Conference in Cleveland.
The annual award is presented to a public official who takes a leadership role in promoting and developing sustainable energy in the community, according to the Green Energy state organization.
Joe Perlaky of the Urban Affairs Dept. at UT will announce the award from Green Energy Ohio to Kaptur at the solar conference. Perlaky serves as vice president of the board of directors for Green Energy Ohio.
“I am extremely honored and look forward to receiving this award,” Kaptur said.
She was the first member of Ohio’s congressional delegation to take the Ohio Solar Tour in 2006 sponsored by Green Energy Ohio. She also met with wind energy stakeholders at an Ohio Wind Working Group meeting in Toledo last year.
As a key member of the federal appropriations committee, Kaptur has delivered funding to her Northwest Ohio district to develop renewable energy resources at several locations. Kaptur was instrumental in getting the $18.6 million grant for research on photovoltaic cells and films at UT in collaboration with BGSU and Ohio State University.
Another project made possible by Kaptur is the joint effort of Green Energy and the Toledo Lucas County Port Authority to provide scientific investigation of wildlife and wind turbines in the western basin of Lake Erie.
