Organization strives to feed Lucas County children all year

Up until last year, Feed Lucas County Children, Inc. solely provided a summer food program for area children. This year, the private nonprofit organization plans to serve more meals and expand its food program.

The organization uses more than 94 percent of every dollar it receives toward its food programs, and while it receives private donations, it buys food from wholesale suppliers to be served to schools, churches and community centers.

Mike Weaner, chairman of the FLCC Board of Directors, said they are trying to reach areas that remain underserved and do it year round.

With the help of more than 160 volunteers, FLCC has served more than 105,000 meals to area children at 56 sites last summer.

Weaner said this year they plan to serve 120,000 meals through Toledo Public Schools’ summer school program.

Executive Director Tony Siebeneck said, “People tend to be generous around the holidays, but do not realize children tend to be in greater need during the summer months when they are out of school.”

FLCC is already preparing for this summer due to the large amount of food given out every day, Siebeneck said.

FLCC’s mission to provide food for children during the school year has led the organization to expand upon its existing food program, which provides hot meals made fresh daily, with the inclusion of after school snacks.

“People have fought hard to get snacks for kids after school. If they need snacks, we’ve got them,” Siebeneck said.

Both Siebeneck and Weaner credited the food program expansion to their kitchen space at the Macomber Building, located at 1501 Monroe St., Downtown.

From their kitchen, the meals or snacks are taken out to service sites.

One of the service sites FLCC visits is the Grace Community Center at 406 W. Delaware Ave.

Betty Amison, Grace Community Center founder and executive director, said they have been a part of FLCC’s program since it started and receive “very adequate and high quality food.”
