Perrysburg firm helps spearhead Yahoo! small business initiativeWritten by Autumn Lee | | email@example.com
Perrysburg-based design firm Madhouse Creative recently joined forces with Silicon Valley-based digital product design company Involution Studios and five other designers to create the foundation of a new Yahoo! small business product code-named “Asteroids.”
Asteroids is an online application consisting of a series of Web site templates made available through a Yahoo! small business subscription that allows small businesses to have a Web presence at a more affordable rate.
With about 500,000 Yahoo! small business subscribers already on board, existing and future subscribers will not have access to these templates until later this year.
Steve Mockensturm, co-founder of Madhouse Creative, indicated companies are re-evaluating their Web presence.
Through these templates, small businesses would have Web sites appearing slightly more sophisticated and matched with more sophisticated underlying programming, Mockensturm said.
“We brought in freelancers to provide a broad range of graphic design so the 20 templates would not look the same,” he said.
According to Mockensturm, Madhouse Creative designed templates that are attractive while keeping them generic enough to reach a variety of businesses including real estate companies, health care professionals and members of the entertainment industry.
“The templates are colorful and have many design elements, but are very adaptable to different kinds of vertical markets,” he said.
Madhouse Creative employee Bill Sattler said designing generic templates created a challenge because most of the company’s designs are customized.
Generally, Madhouse “takes everything the clients want to accomplish with their Web site and designs it to fit their needs,” Sattler said.
The Asteroids project originated with Involutions Studios, which later approached Madhouse Creative to participate with Involutions Studios, which later approached Madhouse Creative to participate.
“Involution Studios produces designs that have a different feel, style and aesthetic. Yahoo! chose us because of our ability to do that,” said Dirk Knemeyer, co-founder and owner of Involution Studios.
Knemeyer emphasized the importance of having a diverse group of designers on this project and gave praise to Mockensturm and the Madhouse Creative staff.
“They are an amazing creative team, and our clients benefit from their involvement on key projects. Steve [Mockensturm]’s leadership and the contributions of their other designers were integral to this work for Yahoo! being a major success,” he said.
In consideration to Involution Studios’ outside partners, Knemeyer said Madhouse Creative served as lead design firm on this project.
Instead of a small business having to settle for a “clunky and junky” Web site, it can have a site with a template that will look just as good, if not better, than custom-designed Web sites, Knemeyer said.
Madhouse Creative previously collaborated with Involution Studios in early 2006.
Through a joint effort, they designed the core Web product for Podcast Ready Inc., an online media distribution service for consumers specializing in audio and video media. Madhouse Creative also developed the interface for Involution Studios’ redesigned corporate Web site.
