Starting from scratch at Erie Street MarketWritten by Autumn Lee | | firstname.lastname@example.org
It’s a fine setting for a morning or afternoon of browsing for everything from fresh food to old antiques, a gateway of commerce to Downtown Toledo. But the Erie Street Market is now a ghost town, its few retailers clinging to the hope that some action will be taken to revitalize the space.
The exits of Superior Antique Mall and manager Peter Kepler are setbacks, but also opportunities to step back and plan for a stronger future. An obvious approach is to secure an anchor, a permanent destination people trust and respect. Perhaps Churchill’s or The Andersons or another Toledo institution could open a location that would breed confidence for other retailers. There is certainly merit to Mayor Finkbeiner’s idea to seek an Amish furniture retailer.
We urge the city and county to pursue means to revitalize what should be a major Downtown destination.
