While the modern technology that we call LASIK was introduced in the late 1980’s many people are not aware that the underlying technology for this procedure, Keratomilcusis, has actually been around since the 1950’s. By joining this older, reliable technology with the more modern development of laser, eye surgeons have been able to produce a highly reliable and highly effective way of correcting vision.
In more recent years, vision correction has been a ”one-size-fits-all” technology. Using standard measurements, doctors could only generally identify and correct lower order aberrations such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. But just as no two people are the same, no two people share the same eye irregularities or have the same vision correction needs.
Now a breakthrough technology called CustomVue can customize your vision correction in a way that has never before been possible. By creating a highly detailed map of your eye, the doctor can identify each tiny imperfection to target vision correction just where you need it. The technique is so effective you’re likely to see better than you did with your glasses or contacts.
CustomVue works with WaveScan, the same technology that reduces distortions in high-powered telescopes, such as the Hubble Telescope when viewing objects in space. With the WaveScan, the doctor can identify and measure individual imperfections in your eyes 25 times more accurately than with other methods. Once your WaveScan measurements are complete, they will be programmed into a sophisticated computer, which will guide the CustomVue laser during the LASIK procedure.
The entire procedure will last just a few minutes and you should not experience any discomfort because of the anesthetic eye drops used. Many patients report vision improvement almost immediately after CustomVue, although it may take several hours or days to notice all of the improvement. Your vision may fluctuate slightly for up to six months following the procedure. The healing process may take a few days during which you may experience some mild discomfort (easily alleviated with Tylenol or other over-the-counter pain medications), blurred vision, light sensitivity and tearing.
Although results can vary from person to person, most patients experience dramatic vision improvement after the CustomVue procedure. In one clinical study, 98% of patients were able to see 20/20 and 100% of patients were able to pass a driving test without glasses or contact lenses. Many patients also report that their night vision improved with the CustomVue as compared to glasses or contact lenses.
If you are at least 21 years of age, have generally healthy eyes and wear corrective glasses or contact lenses for nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, you may be a good candidate for CustomVue treatment. But before you get stared, you will need to meet with an eye doctor to determine your potential benefits and risks. Dr. Martin at OptiVue says, ”Having had the opportunity to introduce many new laser techniques to the Toledo area, I would agree with one of my patients who within minutes after having received her CustomVue laser treatment said, ‘It’s like a miracle!’”
