FirstEnergy Corp. announced the appointment of James M. Murray to the newly created position of president of Ohio Operations.
According to a new release, Murray will be responsible for FirstEnergy’s Ohio utility operating companies: Ohio Edison, The Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and Toledo Edison, which serve 2.1 million customers within 11,000 square miles of northern and central Ohio.
“Bringing our state utility operations under a single organizational structure is a key part of our strategy to continue enhancing service reliability to our customers,” said Anthony J. Alexander, president and chief executive officer of FirstEnergy. “Jim brings a wealth of experience in operations and customer service, and will have ultimate accountability and responsibility.”
Murray joined the company in 1969 at the W. H. Sammis Plant. He held various plant positions, including superintendent of the Gorge and Niles plants. He currently serves as regional president of Toledo Edison, a position he has held since 1997. Murray serves on numerous boards, including the Regional Growth Partnership, the Toledo Area Chamber of Commerce, ProMedica Bay Park Community Hospital and Downtown Toledo, Inc. Prior to joining the company, he was a sergeant in the U. S. Army, including a tour of duty in Vietnam.
Trent A. Smith, currently on special assignment managing the Distribution Business Initiative, has been promoted to regional president, Toledo Edison. Smith began his career with the company in 1988 as an associate marketing representative. He has held various positions in sales, marketing, and customer accounts, including vice president of Sales and Marketing.
